Peak-hour Stops Withdrawn With MML Timetable Change

THE May 2018 Thameslink timetable will increase train frequencies on the Midland route from Bedford to seven per hour, but the consequential timetable recast means that current peak-hour stops by main line services at Bedford and Luton will be withdrawn.

There is likely to be further bad news for longer-distance commuters when the Invitation to Tender is issued for the new East Midlands franchise later this year. This will reflect electrification to Corby, with new semi-fast services for Kettering and Wellingborough that will replace stops by the current InterCity services that link Leicester, Sheffield and Nottingham with St Pancras.

The lack of electrification beyond Bedford created a need for main line services to make more intermediate stops during the peak, which has slowed journey times between Sheffield and St Pancras to two hours and 25 minutes, compared with off-peak timings of close to two hours.
