Rocky shores and sandy beaches are where you’ll find the African black oystercatcher. Summer is breeding season, so look out for nest scrapes close to rocks and kelp.

While the right equipment is essential, the difference between an average bird photo and a superior one often lies in the ability to predict the subject’s behaviour. These shots of African black oystercatchers are the result of many hours of patient observation. I studied the birds until I had a clear idea of their daily foraging routine in the intertidal zone, then waited for low tide and perfect weather conditions. Because I knew exactly where to find the birds, I could utilise the sweet early morning light. When photographing birds, especially smaller ones, the angle of the shot is important. Images created at eye level always have more impact, as they create an intimate atmosphere. If need be, lie flat on your stomach to get that perspective.
