SHE’D never been so ex cited about being sick. It confirmed something she’d been praying and waiting for: she was pregnant. It seems like Mmatema Gavu is growing up right in front of Mzansi’s eyes. She first stole the hearts of millions when she burst on to the scene as a fresh faced 22yearold Idols SA hopeful.
After making it into the finals, she became a regular on local screens. Four years after her powerful voice wowed fans with her rendition of Tina Turner, Adele and Whitney Houston songs, Mmatema got married to the love of her life, Tshepo Gavu, and is now expecting their first child.
“It is a boy,” the momtobe tells Move!. The couple are quite excited about the prospect of being parents.
She first broke the news to her thousands of fans on Instagram, with a picture where she’s draped in a lacy, revealing black top and embraced by her husband. He’s got his hands on her bump while leaning in towards her, as if he was about to kiss her on the forehead.
The caption was her favourite Bible verse, Jeremiah 29:11, “For (only) He has good plans for us, plans to help us proper and give us a great future.”
This was an official announcement of her pregnancy earlier this month and since then, it’s been an exciting time of getting through the many congratulatory messages and preparing for “baby Gavu”.
MOMMY DIARIES
Mmatema tells us about the day she found out about her baby. “I have never been so excited about being sick. The minute I threw up at the gym I rushed to get the (pregnancy) test, went to share the news with my husband and he was very emotional! He just held me and said, ‘Thank you, I love you’.
“We prayed, thanked God and called our families right after,” she says.
