New proposal could see maths removed as a compulsory pass requirement.
THE quality of mathematics in South Africa is on the decline, with a 2014 World Economic Forum report placing South Africa’s quality of education in last place out of 148 countries. For decades, in order to pass a grade, it was compulsory that you pass maths, but the Department of Basic Education is now in the process of consultations proposing that maths be removed as a compulsory pass requirement for Grades 7, 8 and 9.
WHY MAKE MATHS COMPULSORY
Elijah Mhlanga, spokesperson for the Department of Basic Education, says the reason the department is considering this option is due to the failing rate in the above mentioned grades.
