1 Establish an order
‘Make sure you’re getting the most out of your products by applying them in the right order,’ says celebrity facialist Michaella Bolder. ‘Always use the thinnest products first. For example, in the morning, after cleansing, you apply your serum or layer your serums with a few minutes’ gap in between each, then you work up in weight and thickness, so next up is your eye cream, followed by your moisturiser and an SPF to finish. The same rule applies for the evening, you just switch the last step for a facial oil or a retinol-based product if you use one.’
2 Turn down the heat
‘Yes, a steamy shower may seem tempting, but it is probably one of the worst things you can do for your skin,’ says Dr. Anjali Mahto. Hot water strips away natural oils and causes a mild burn, which can create dryness and redness. ‘Showers should ideally be no longer than 10 minutes, with lukewarm water,’ she says. ‘Then try and moisturise as soon as you’re out of the shower to prevent further water loss.’ Sanctuary Spa Ultra Rich Wet Skin Moisture Miracle, £10
3 Do things differently
Always forgetting to apply lotion on your neck and chest? Celebrity facialist Abigail James says, ‘Pop moisturiser on your decolletage and work upwards. This is a great way to remember all areas, and also gives you a lifting effect when you work the cream up and into your skin’. The Inkey List Multi-Biotic Moisturiser 30ml, £12.99
