Whatever you're looking for in a weekend trip, you'll almost certainly find it in Edinburgh. This historic city has beautiful architecture, inspiring art museums, great shops, and gorgeous gardens. There's even a beach just three miles from the city centre!
Georgian splendour
North of the Old Town is the elegant New Town - actually not 'new' at all, as it was built in the 18th century. The Georgian streets here are laid out in a strict grid pattern. often with central gardens, and the tall grey houses are beautifully proportioned. For a fine example, visit the grand Georgian House at 7 Charlotte Square, laid out in all its finery (entry £10; for opening times visit nts.org.uk/ visit/places/ georgian-house).
Old Town sights
The Old Town is a must-see. Stroll up the Royal Mile (actually four connecting streets) to the imposing castle, set on top of an extinct volcano. Here you'll find the oldest building in the city, St Margaret's Chapel, dating from 1130. Behind the castle is the lively Grassmarket with its shops, stalls, and bars. Look out for the Camera Obscura in Castlehill - Edinburgh's oldest visitor attraction - and the Writers' Museum in Lady Stair's House, and gaze down the atmospheric narrow alleyways known as 'closes' and 'wynds'.
