So why did Meghan write about the one subject critics are likely to argue she knows little, if anything, about?

Whatever the inspiration, children’s books are big earners if you can garner enough publicity – a skill the new author, in my opinion, has in spades.

And, if Meghan’s storytelling skills match her ability for self-publicity, then she is surely in line for this year’s Booker Prize for literature.

But, as details of Meghan’s latest venture were made public, the contrast between the former actor and her sister-in-law the Duchess of Cambridge could barely be more obvious.

Because in the same week that publishers of The Bench pushed out the press release bragging of their new signing, a video showing what family life is like within the Cambridge clan was released by the Palace.
