Janet didn’t usually go out in the evenings. She normally felt exhausted after work, so she cooked herself a simple meal and slumped in front of the TV. But she decided to make an effort when her new young neighbours asked if she’d like to go to a pub quiz with them.
She came home, bolted down a sandwich, then went next door. Millie and her husband Ed were going to give her a lift.
It was crowded in the pub, and it looked for a moment as if they weren’t going to be able to find a seat. But they spotted a table for four right at the back and sat down with their drinks just before another group of people got there.
‘Phew!’ Millie said as she took off her coat. ‘This quiz seems to get more and more popular!’
‘Yes,’ Janet agreed, wondering if she’d be able to cope with the sound of so many people talking at once. ‘Has it been going on for long?’
Millie shrugged before she took a sip of her gin. ‘I don’t know, to be honest. We’ve only been coming for a few months, but I think it’s been going on for years. It’s definitely getting more popular, though, and we haven’t got much chance of winning because some of the teams have six people.’
‘So why do you come?’ Janet asked.
‘It’s fun,’ Millie replied as she waved at a woman at another table. ‘You get to know other people, and it feels good when you can answer a lot of the questions. We came third once, didn’t we, Ed?’
Millie’s husband nodded. ‘Yes, but only once. We’ve been rubbish ever since.’
