When Justin Theroux celebrated his 46th birthday last month, his wife Jennifer Aniston was nowhere to be seen. Instead, he was spotted partying in the Hungarian city of Budapest with celebrity pals Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis.

And now Woman’s Day can reveal that Jennifer’s absence was no accident, with the pair secretly agreeing to a trial separation. In a desperate bid to save their troubled two-year marriage, Jennifer and Justin are taking a break from each other, and according to our well-placed sources, those close to the couple fear that divorce is now inevitable.

“It’s been a very difficult year for them,” tells an insider. “Jen still loves Justin deeply and wants things to work, but she feels helpless. It got to the point where the arguments were constant and they couldn’t see a way forward. Taking time out from the marriage is their only option.”

With 48-year-old Jennifer shooting her new film Dumplin’ in Georgia, Justin, 46, is staying on in New York. The Leftovers actor – who’s spent the past few months filming in Europe – usually visits his wife when she’s working away, but this time, they’ve agreed to have no contact. And Jennifer, whose first marriage to Brad Pitt ended after five years together, has asked Justin to have a long think about his commitment.
