A soft board, brimming with photos and swatches of fabrics, hangs in a corner of Arati Rao’s studio in Brooklyn. Even a cursory glance at these snatches of inspiration gives one a snapshot of the rugmaker’s creative process. For example, images of desertscapes and mountains jostle for space against evocative photos of natural patterns—the languid swells and dips of a rising tide, or dunes of sand. Travel, and the beauty of far-flung lands has always fuelled Rao’s process. She founded Tantuvi in 2012 following a meandering trip to India, and launched a line of rugs three years later. Ever since, each of her collections of rugs— which are handwoven by seventh and fifth generation artisans in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh respectively—has culled visual cues from places she’s visited.
