You could be forgiven for mistaking it to be a wada...
First-time visitors to the 6th floor home of Amar and Jyotsana Chakradeo indeed stare with bewilderment at the hardwood timber double doors fitted out with a sturdy brass latch.
As you step in and explore, you realize that the home is actually a place of deep character. Traditional art and period architectural features blend effortlessly with facets of contemporary living; it's an uplifting décor where one experiences culture without feeling overwhelmed.
Suhas Ekbote of Suhas Ekbote Designer Furniture says,"I heartily believe that a home should be appreciated not for the way it was crafted but for the way it really makes one feel."
Deploring the present obsession for flashy décor, he further says, "Nowadays it's more about the show off. The focus in on making a style statement through exorbitant carpets, chandeliers, sofas, and accessories. Everything is rather programmed; the lack of inspiration and creativity is evident. It's lamentable that neither clients nor professionals in the trade bother to think what emotions the space should eventually evoke."
Culture weighed heavily on Amar's mind owing to his upbringing in downtown Pune. Suhas was aware of Amar's tryst with the wada ecology; being a friend, he also knew of Amar's refined taste.
The concept emerged after several discussions among key stakeholders; no design brief, no blueprint. Amar's daughter Gayatri, who is a costume designer, was also helpful with her inputs in selecting fabrics and colours. Suhas knew it had to be a décor that connected the family with their roots in a subtle way.
