2023 Lexus RZ

Lexus says it will make only battery-powered vehicles by 2035, and the new RZ 450e is the brand’s first dedicated EV. This midsize crossover indicates Lexus’ future lineup will have luxurious appeal, but we find this first effort lacking in crucial areas.

As a model intended to ease Lexus loyalists into electric driving, the RZ 450e doesn’t lean into idiosyncrasy. That’s laudable in some ways, disappointing in others. Its exterior mixes familiar details with new approaches. One example: A filled-in version of the spindle grille creates brand association while indicating its EV-ness, even as its slim taillight bar and spoiler spikes give off a “robot-warrior helmet” vibe.
