SEMANTIC SATIATION
Motoring World|November 2024
What if I told you that the Ford Mustang isn't a sports car? You'd probably call me crazy. Now, what if I went a step further and said that the Porsche 911 isn't a sports car either? You'd probably be calling the nearest mental hospital to come take me away. Before you do that, though, let me tell you the traditional definition of a sports car. A sports car is any car that can seat two people, has a soft top, and can be used for competition.

SEMANTIC SATIATION

Unless you're specifically talking about the convertible versions of the aforementioned cars, they are not sports cars. What do you call them, then? Add a permanent hardtop to a sports car and you get a grand tourer. Any high-performance automobile designed for speed, agility, and handling is labelled a sports car these days, but in reality, a majority of them are grand tourers.

Admittedly, a grand tourer doesn't quite evoke the same excitement as a sports car, but that's reality.

Moving past these relatively welldefined categories, the classification of performance cars truly breaks down. Now, what exactly is a supercar? An arbitrary combination of price, performance, and rarity classifies something as a supercar.

With a name like that, you'd think supercars are the absolute pinnacle of automotive design and engineering, but you'd be mistaken.
