On average, India is responsible for 7% of the world's total carbon dioxide emissions. Around 7.8 million tons of textile waste is accumulated in India. After China and the US, India is the world's third largest polluter. From the perspective of the logistics sector, the impact on global carbon dioxide emissions can rise to 40% by 2050.
At Phygital Retail Convention 2024, Vikas Anand, MD, DHL Supply Chain, expressed why sustainability is a good idea and how logistics players like DHL can help create sustainable supply chains for retail.
Addressing a keynote session, 'A Leap Towards Sustainability - From linear to a Circular Supply Chain,' he emphasized on playing their part in becoming responsible by helping build sustainable supply chains.
Recyclability
Commonly, the technology industry is believed to be at the highest level of recyclability.
"We serve a lot of tech customers and believe that technology customers get it, and they are at the forefront of recyclability. The retail teams have to learn from technology.
If we look at the circularity of garments in India, only 25% is recycled. What can be done to make it better?" asked Anand.
Sustainable packaging has taken centre stage and will remain a key focus of the industry in the future. Avoiding the use of plastic and using more sustainable shredding machines and packaging solutions are some of the measures that can help be more sustainable," he said.
How Logistics Players Can Help
As an important stakeholder, DHL aspires to play its part in helping decongest cities and become a more responsible company.
