With over 300 years old handicrafts, ‘Wood Inlay’ is still crafted by artisans in the country. India is rich in diversity and has over 3000 craft forms, each embedded with its uniqueness.
The industry started civilizations ago, boomed during the medieval times, and continued to flourish until India was colonized. The decline of the handicraft market was inevitable as cheap quality machine-made products bombarded Indian markets, and heavy taxes were levied on Indian products. After the independence, the sector continued to suffer, and the artisans were forced to survive on daily wages. Artisans are like the soul of India’s handicraft pride, and brands like Kala Tattva plays a vital role in reviving India's oldest craft Industry. Bharath Kumar, the founder of Kala Tattva, is a second-generation entrepreneur, taking his father’s foundation to the next level. Before Kala Tattva was founded in 2019, Bharath’s father, N KUMAR, started his business back in 2005 as Bharath Handicrafts. At 13, N Kumar began his journey as a wood artisan and won a state award for his skills and artistic work.
The brand name Kala Tattva is derived from a Sanskrit word that means art element and its limitless creativity. Bharath, the company's founder, believes it is necessary to carry the artisans' legacy forward and help it flourish worldwide. Based in Karnataka, the company focuses on jumping on the digital bandwagon to benefit its artisans and take the art to a greater level.
