Bodily functions, embarrassing crushes and down-there hair... I will talk about pretty much everything. But money? I find chatting about that cringier than watching sex scenes with an elderly relative. So why am I – and perhaps you – so fearful of financial conversations? I think it’s because we were brought up thinking that it’s just not polite to talk cash. That it’s brash, showy or crass.

But I’ve learnt – the hard way – that ignoring money can lead to friction in relationships, whether it’s with friends, families or partners. My ex-husband and I were compatible in many ways but our attitudes to finances differed. He was cautious; I was more of a risk-taker.
