WORLD MARMOT DAY
ORIGINS: Proposed in the 1990s and adopted as an official holiday in Alaska in 2009
The heaviest members of the squirrel family are celebrated rodents in the United States, but there are actually 15 species living across Asia, Europe and North America. Some scientists have postulated that the bubonic plague that wiped out half of Europe's 14thcentury population originated from Chinese marmots.
The tarbagan marmot, found in northern China, Mongolia and eastern Russia is listed as "Endangered" by the IUCN. The Manchurian plague of 1910-11, which killed about 60,000 people, is thought to have originated from this species, which were hunted for their fur in Manchuria. The plague jumps from marmots to humans through the consumption of meat or through the bite of the tarbagan flea.
