Anna Kendrick is grace under fireand, it turns out, grace under a fire alarm. When an alert sounds at a New York City hotel during her interview with People, the Pitch Perfect star calmly ponders aloud whether to keep chatting or evacuate in the event of an actual emergency. But the noise soon ceases. "We're back," she says brightly.
"What were we talking about?" The subject at hand is her acclaimed directorial debut, Woman of the Hour (on Netflix Oct. 18). It tested her performance under pressure, since she also stars in the true-crime story about Rodney Alcala, a serial killer who appeared on an episode of The Dating Game and charmed contestant Cheryl Bradshaw (Kendrick) into selecting him over two other bachelors. "There was a day in preproduction where everything was falling apart," remembers Kendrick, 39. "It truly felt like, 'I don't know if the train's going to fall off the tracks."
