Of the 53 nations that battled it out over 239 matches in qualification, 23 successful sides have made it through to join hosts Germany for what promises to be a tournament to remember.

The Germans - who beat Turkey in a bid to hold the event - have staged the European Championship once before, in 1988 as West Germany, but this is the first time since reunification. The entire country has embraced the occasion, building huge fan zones with giant screens and putting on music concerts, street art and fitness classes to entertain the millions of visitors from across the continent.
