Luke Evans stepped into the studio wearing a Burberry printed silk shirt paired with shorts, exuding a laid-back vacation vibe. In fact, he did just return from a getaway to Bangkok—a trip he made during his break from filming The Weekend Escape, Luc Besson’s latest movie that is being shot in Taiwan. “I backpacked through Southeast Asia when I was young and visited Bangkok then. After many years, returning to familiar places really brought back a lot of warm memories!” he reminisced. He has documented his stay in Taiwan extensively on Instagram, from learning to make xiao long bao at Din Tai Fung, to singing “Endless Love” at karaoke. Many of his followers have playfully suggested that he’s practically an ambassador for tourism in Taiwan.
It’s hard to fathom a Hollywood star who has starred in numerous blockbuster films, such as The Hobbit and The Fast & Furious series, possessing such a down-to-earth demeanour. Whenever he films in a foreign country, he seizes the opportunity to explore. However, he doesn’t rely on private cars and chauffeurs; he prefers the travel app “GetYourGuide” to search for local guides and to navigate public transport, immersing himself in new experiences in different locales. “Hotels are boring. I want to get out and experience things; only then can I stay connected to the real world,” he shared.
