‘JUNGLE JUNGLE’, ILHAM GALLERY

Visit Ilham Gallery for an exhibition by Taiwanese artist Zhang Xu Zhan entitled ‘Jungle Jungle’. Running until October 6, 2024, this show marks Zhang Xu Zhan’s debut in Malaysia. ‘Jungle Jungle’ is an eclectic mix of video animation, mixed media sculpture, paper puppets, and a site-specific paper installation inspired by “huzhi,” Taiwan’s traditional papier-mâché technique often used in ceremonial festivals. The exhibition also features the film Compound Eyes of Tropical, which won Best Animated Short Film at the 2022 Golden Horse Awards.
As a contemporary visual artist and animation filmmaker, Zhang Xu Zhan explores cultural commonalities and diversities. His work examines how music and folktales evolve and adapt to different regions, resulting in unique localised versions. This was inspired from his artist residency in Indonesia where he discovered local folktales that relate closely to other Asian stories. By blending these with tales from Taiwan and China, he highlights global connections through shared storytelling traditions.
You are encouraged to walk through the narrative from a fly’s compound eye, where the folktale acts as a vessel filled with symbolic metaphors. This multi-perspective approach emphasises cultural flow and the interconnectedness of humans and animals.
