FOR some reason, grapes are not widely grown in this country and there seems to be an assumption that they only grow well in warm countries. In fact, grapes were introduced into the UK by the Romans, and Henry VIII had extensive vineyards from York to the south coast.
Correct site
New varieties can cope with northern regions although, as you might expect, they prefer a warm, sunny position outdoors to fruit well. The great advantage is that they take up very little room at the base and only as much space at the top as you let them. Ideally, grape vines need pruning to a framework on a wall, fence or pergola that allows fruiting spurs to develop, making pruning and picking easier.
Regular training
The secret to success is regular training, because if they are left to grow these vigorous climbers can soon become a tangled mess, producing very little fruit and being susceptible to pests and fungal disease on both foliage and fruits. A regular pruning and training regime will keep the vine controlled and encourage it to produce good-sized, healthy fruit.
