Dating can be a scary prospect at any time in life, but it's arguably more so as you get older. You may be out of practice and unsure about current dating etiquette or trends, you could be a long-time singleton or divorced or widowed and carrying some of the emotional baggage that comes with age. And while the days of exchanging numbers in a bar or flirting at work still exist, more and more people are connecting on websites and via dating apps.
'In this era of technology, there are many opportunities for online dating in later life,' says Nia Williams, a relationship coach for Miss Date Doctor (relationshipsmdd.com). The advantages, says Nia, are that online dating sites can help us to expand our social network. They can also provide a sense of security and safety, she adds, because these burgeoning relationships happen remotely.
Then there are the drawbacks. But forewarned is forearmed, and knowing what the pitfalls are will prepare you and help you to manage expectations. 'Dating online consumes time and requires effort, says Nia. Plus, there's the risk of being deceived you may be catfished or someone you like may turn out to be hedging their bets and are speaking to others as well. But seeing others succeed in finding a partner provides hope to keep trying.
'Many people miss the chance at love because they're insecure or afraid, adds Chris Pleines, a dating expert from datingscout.com.
'Know that love is still love no matter the age.' So, from writing an authentic and positive profile to keeping safe, here is some sage advice on dating over 50.
