Mention the name Namaqualand - especially in the Cape - and you're likely to be regaled with stories of endless fields of vivid spring flowers. It's a spectacular part of the country, especially between August and October, but outside of flower season, the historic home of the Nama people hides many treasures.
Before I embark on a Namaqua tale of my own, let's address the elephant in the room. By now, you may have noticed that Rizqah and I are avid campers, often opting for the wildness and minimalism of camping over the comfort and luxury of chalets and guesthouses.
Now, you might think: 'This Micky guy obviously doesn't understand Garden&Home's target audience! We want amazing escapes wrapped in plush niceties!" I get it, but hear me out - camping is like having a garden in your home. For years, we've dreamed of owning a rooftop tent, and this trip was our official test-drive of the mobile glamping experience.
Just Pitching Up
Namaqua National Park is one of our country's most underrated destinations. It's around 550 km from Cape Town, but the vast majority of the journey takes place on the impeccable Cape Namibia Route, more commonly known as the N7 highway.
Most travellers are likely to arrive at the Skilpad Rest Camp gate, which is totally accessible by sedan or hatchback. Those with a more adventurous streak can opt for the 4x4-only Groenrivier and Hondeklip Bay gates - which is exactly what we did.
You see, it's been a dream of mine to explore the park's untouched, rugged coastline. SANParks has set up nine basic campsites along a 44 km route, each featuring eco toilets, stone lapa areas with firepits and spectacular views of the ocean.
