The '70s Are Back

Nostalgia is back in a big way. From interior design to fashion (and an unexpected resurgence of Kate Bush and Top Gun), looking back at past decades has become the trend of the day. Nowhere is this more evident than indoors, where houseplants have taken over once again.

Houseplants started becoming a staple in the 1960s, and by the early 1970s, they featured in almost every home. Cascading hanging plants, large trees and blooming plants homes had it all. The greenery complemented the warm oranges and chocolate browns wonderfully, along with natural textures like wood, adding a bit of outdoors to the soft but colourful geometric patterns of the time.

Interest in houseplants by no means petered out in the decades to come, but certainly wasn't as fervent as the '70s. That is, until the 2010s emerged. With more and more people moving to cities and away from nature, designers were looking for a way to bring - nature into the home. That, combined with the social media boom that left Fiddle Leaf Figs plastered over Pinterest, made a resurgence of this trend all but guaranteed.
