Awamori, an Okinawan distilled beverage boasting a heritage that stretches back nearly six centuries, is making headway into Singapore's spirit scene due to its rarity and flavours (think: nutty, grainy, and spicy).
Native to Okinawa, awamori was only consumed by royalty during the Ryukyu Kingdom in the 15th century and used as a gift to strengthen its relationships with powerful neighbours like Japan and China.
The spirit's production method, a product of Thai and Chinese influences, tells of the close trading relationship between the Ryukyu islands, China and Thailand. It was said that the Thai drink lao khao, a type of glutinous rice liquor, inspired the awamori.
