SHOPPING CENTRE HORROR MY BOY LOST HIS THUMB

Strolling through the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney, one afternoon, the sun was shining brightly.

My husband, Joe, 42, and I loved going on family walks with our three-year-old son, Lewis.

It was so great to see Lewis' face light up with excitement as he discovered all the different flowers and native plants.

When he'd had enough walking, we decided to roll down a grassy hill together.

With our arms stretched above our heads, we slowly tumbled to the bottom, before racing back to the top and doing it again.

'One more time!' Lewis giggled after every run.

As night started to fall, we didn't want the fun to end, so we headed to our local shopping centre in Broadway, Sydney, for dinner.

Lewis was practically bursting with excitement as the three of us stepped on the travelator, heading upstairs to the restaurant.

Standing behind Joe and Lewis, I couldn't help but smile as I thought about the fun-filled day we'd had. Suddenly, close to the top, little Lewis let out a blood-curdling scream.

'What the hell?' Joe exclaimed.

At first, I assumed Lewis was just being cheeky, but when he burst into tears, I knew something was seriously wrong.

Stepping off the travelator, Lewis was holding out his right hand and his clothes were covered in blood.

Taking a closer look, I could see that half his thumb appeared to have been severed by something on the travelator.

Frozen in my tracks, all I could do was scream.
