Sudden cardiac arrest affects an estimated 20,000 Australians out of hospital each year. It occurs when the heart stops pumping blood around the body.
'Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and sudden cardiac death (SCD) refer to the sudden cessation of cardiac activity,' cardiologist Dr Monique Watts explains.
CAUSES
The primary cause in people 35 and over is coronary heart disease. In younger people it's more likely to be genetic.
