I had the delightful opportunity to experience this amazing live music series at the legendary Water Street Music Hall in Rochester, New York. Water Street Music Hall has hosted performances from some of music’s greatest names including Parliament Funkadelic, Maroon 5, Iggy Pop, the Mighty, Mighty Boss Tones and Jodeci to name a few. Now the music venue can add to that list the multi-talented Jacob Webb and saxophone sensation Art Sherrod Jr.
The evening was hosted by Rochester’s own host with the most Tony “Grand Tone” Simmons. The lovely and talented daughters of Grammy nominated saxophone extraordinaire Jimmy High-smith opened the show. These classy ladies collectively go by the name of Luna Soul Child. Believe me their music will send you soaring to the moon. The group is made up of two sisters Taryn (flute) and Arianna (keyboard). For this performance the group was backed by bassist Prince O and Alex Parris on drums. Luna Soul Child started the set with their arrangement of the sensual “Say Yes” by Floetry. On their arrangement the flute was prominent. The flute clearly was the lyricist. As Taryn played each note it sounded as if they were lyrics instead of notes. Arianna played subtly to support her sister’s playing. Luna Soul Child performed a funky medley from Jill Scott meshing the fun “Long Walk” and “It’s Love”, which gave Arianna a chance to showcase her skills on the keys.
