In celebration of their 50th Anniversary, The Manhattan Transfer's recent appearance at The GRAMMY Museum quickly evolved into an evening of raucous back-and-forth musical stories of this famous musical family. And we were made to feel included in this family for all the fun (several of their family members were in the audience). Amidst all this good-natured ribbing and teasing, there was the examination and insights into the evolution of their music. Each member had their point of view of how the most straightforward melodic structures are taken to the heights of the tightest, most complex harmonies imaginable using numerous styles.
Now, 50-plus years later, with 10 Grammy Awards out of 20 nominations and inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame – it's still tricky to musically define who exactly Manhattan Transfer is. Their music has evolved and created their unmistakable sound, no matter the song. Is it pop, jazz, Brazilian jazz, R&B, rock and roll, swing, or symphonic? All those musical genres are explored and presented through musical styles of a cappella, vocalese, and scatting, incorporating sophisticated rhythms, harmonies, and sometimes symphonic orchestrations of popular music. So basically, you name it, The Manhattan Transfer has sung it, and you've heard it.
