His influence on the world of modern music and in particular making the music of Brazil accessible to the world is incalculable.
Like Jobim, Mendes' musical reach was global.
Mendes stands out as one of influential figures who created a bridge between the music of Brazil with global pop culture.
His six plus decade career has always showcased a lively and innovative mixture of the traditional sounds of Brazil, especially samba and boss nova with jazz, funk and pop music.
His music reflects not only Brazilian culture but it is also a universal style that transcends borders while captivating generations of all ages through the years, leaving an enduring legacy and a body of work that will continue to be enjoyed for decades to come.
Born in Niteroi in 1941, Mendes grew up in the musical heart of Brazil where in the 1950's especially, the country became a fertile environment for various musical styles. However, it was Bossa Nova that took a hold of the national identity. Bossa Nova was not only a musical style but a genre that became a cultural movement that reflected optimism and modernity.
While trained in classical piano, a young Mendes' curiosity soon led him to explore Bossa Nova, Jazz and other styles in which he immersed himself while studying at the Rio de Janeiro conservatory of music.
His early influences in nova music included icons such as Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
However, he was equally mesmerised with American Jazz with musicians like Stan Getz and Cannonball Adderley in particular.
