The 29-year-old former Darlington and Gateshead striker has secured a popular return to the north-east after having helped Crawley Town win promotion to League One.
Campbell’s time away in West Sussex was a huge success having made 45 appearances last season, scoring seven goals, as the Red Devils toppled Crewe Alexandra to win the League Two play-off final at Wembley.
Capped at England U16, U17 and U19 level, Campbell started his senior career at Newcastle United, where he made his competitive first team debut against Atromitos in the Europa League in August 2012, aged just 17. He then went on to make his Premier League debut against Stoke City the following season.
In all, he played over 370 games in his senior career including spells at Notts County, Morecambe and Carlisle United, and even returned for a brief loan spell at Hartlepool in 2014.
