THE Chancellor's deputy has defended the Government paying its value for money tsar £950 for each day he works.

David Goldstone, a onetime HS2 non-executive director, is expected to "help us realise the benefits from every pound of public spending", according to Rachel Reeves.

He will take the role for a year and is responsible for giving advice to the Chancellor and Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones over saving cash by reforming systems and improving policy outcomes.
