Biden: I quit re-election race to save democracy

US President Joe Biden said he decided to end his re-election campaign because he wanted to save the American way of life from felon Donald Trump.

He told TV viewers: "I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America's future all merited a second term.

"But nothing nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy, and that includes personal ambition." The President, 81, has often spoken of the threat from Mr Trump.

And in his first televised address since stepping down on Sunday, Mr Biden said he was backing Vice-President Kamala Harris to unite their fellow Democrats and the country.
