Buying plants, compost compost and equipment can add up, yet with planning, you can keep bills under control, said Michael Foote, editor-inchief at money saving website QuoteGoat.com. "By embracing a thrifty mindset and adopting practical strategies, you can reduce costs while still enjoying a beautiful garden."

Instead of buying compost in bags, make your own. "Layer 'green' materials like fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds and freshly cut grass with 'brown' materials such as dry leaves, shredded newspaper and cardboard. You can produce nutrientrich compost in three to six months." Collect twigs to use as plant supports cartons and containers as planters.
