Mary, 91, recalls trailblazing job as female police driver 70yrs ago

ONE of the first female police drivers has returned to her old patch and revealed how she overcame sexist restrictions to do her job in the 1950s.

Mary d'Arcy Kincaid, 91, started out as a police officer in 1953, at a time when women had to rely on male colleagues for a lift.

Three years later, she decided to apply for a job as a police driver, as the advert did not specify a gender.

Mary recalled: "I was so excited when I passed my entrance exams.

"When the memo circulated inviting applications for police drivers, I thought, why not?
