RUSSIAN spies plotted to firebomb commercial jets in a botched operation that sparked warehouse blazes, counter-terror chiefs fear.

It is believed Vladimir Putin's GU officers planted the magnesium devices hoping they would end up on transatlantic flights.

But one ignited at a DHL HQ in Minworth, near Birmingham, while the other set a shipping container ablaze at the firm's facility in Leipzig, Germany.
