The average monthly per capita consumption expenditure (MPCE) in India saw significant growth in 2023-24, fuelled by higher spending across urban and rural households and a narrowing consumption gap between the two, according to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Friday.

In nominal terms, the MPCE increased to ₹4,122 in rural areas and ₹6,996 in urban areas in 2023-24, marking a year-on-year growth of 9% and 8%, respectively, the data showed.
