AN "inspirational" Plymouth nurse who lost both her legs to sepsis achieved her dream of walking down the aisle to marry her "soulmate" and there was not a dry eye in the room as Karen Paget tied the knot with partner Lyndon.
Karen, who works at Derriford Hospital, started to feel unwell with flu-like symptoms after returning from a holiday in Wales. Three days later, she took a turn for the worse and Lyndon rushed her to hospital.
An intensive care consultant diagnosed sepsis, and she was told she may have an infection in the bowel.
Karen's family were told to prepare for the worst as she was taken into surgery.
She said: "I honestly felt like I was going to die as I felt so unwell." Lyndon recalled: "The medical team said you need to call the family because it's very serious. We all said our goodbyes. I thought it was over, but actually it was just the beginning." Part of Karen's bowel was removed in the operation in August 2018 but after the operation her kidneys failed, meaning she needed dialysis.
