The 28-year-old midfielder has skippered the Pilgrims in three of their last four games when Joe Edwards has been named among the substitutes, most recently in the 2-1 defeat away to Leeds United in front of close to 37,000 fans at Elland Road on November 11.
It is an indication of the high regard he is held in by manager Steven Schumacher after stepping up to play in the Championship for the first time in his career.
Houghton said: “I have enjoyed it. I have never really had the opportunity anywhere else. I have had James Coppinger (Doncaster Rovers) and Dean Lewington (MK Dons) as captains who were stalwarts in the side and never got injured.
“I always feel like I’m kind of a captain in terms of being quite vocal and I try to lead by example, so it’s nice to be recognised by the manager to wear the armband. Joe Edwards is in that category of Dean Lewington and James Coppinger as top professionals.”
