PLYMOUTH schools dealing with the most truancy among pupils have been named. And the number of unauthorised absences at state-run secondary schools in Plymouth has almost tripled since the Covid-19 pandemic.
Some 1.5% of school sessions – defined as half a day of school per pupil – in Plymouth were missed due to unauthorised absences in the autumn and spring terms of the 2018/19 academic year. That rose to 3.7% in 2022/23 and 4.1% in 2023/24 according to the latest official figures.
But the rates at some schools are far higher than at others. Around one in 13 school sessions (7.6%) at Marine Academy Plymouth were missed due to unauthorised absences in the autumn and spring terms of 2023/24. That’s the highest rate for any state-run secondary school in our city.
