$9.6m lost to scammers posing as staff of firms like Tencent

In a span of less than three months, at least $9.6 million has been lost to scammers who impersonated staff of China-based companies such as Tencent, WeChat and UnionPay.

At least 443 of such cases have been reported since Aug 28, the police said on Nov 11.

Victims received phone calls from scammers saying they were from these companies and that a subscription the victims had previously signed up for was about to expire.
