Managing the overwhelm as a mother
Gravid
|July-Sept 2022
A 2018 study by Welch's juice company found that mothers work 2.5 times harder than the level warranted by a typical full-time job. According to the study, the average mother works from 6:23 am to 8:31 pm with under 2 hours of free time during the day. The statistics showed that mothers work a 14hour shift on a daily basis. No wonder mothers are overwhelmed!
Mothers of little kids are really amazing. Taking care of our sweetie pies is a labor of love and yet can leave us feeling very stressed and exhausted at times. Children literally rely on a mother for survival.
Breakfast, lunch, supper and in between it's mommy. Dressing kids, bathing kids, feeding kids and playing with kids - it's mommy. We mothers are also responsible for keeping the house clean and washing the laundry along with all the countless tasks of running a household.
Mothers give up so much to get up in the middle of the night to take care of their babies and are entrusted with the huge responsibility of attending to the physical and emotional needs of their children as well as their spirituality. When the going gets tough, we can all use some guidance and mindset to get through the day's challenges and focus on what's really important - our beautiful children.
Nowadays, the work-life balance is harder than ever before and so many mothers work out of the home. As a Child and Family Therapist for 20 years, I have dedicated my life to helping children and families heal with the best therapies available. As a Registered Play Therapy Supervisor, EMDR Consultant and First Responder, my goal is always to help stressed out, struggling mothers go from overwhelmed to playful, connected parents because it makes everything so much better.
When we're overwhelmed, the first task is to stop the overwhelm! Then, we can focus on ways to be the happy mothers we truly want to be. Sometimes, the answer lies in working on our mindset as mothers and rearranging our schedules to make life manageable. Sometimes, it's all about better self-care so we can give our children what they need without feeling resentful. I truly believe there is a way for mothers to feel good about raising their beautiful families.
