Round Five: The Best of the Rest

Ailsa McWhinnie, APOY project manager, chooses An Intimate Landscape by Marriam Hughes, West Sussex Canon EOS 750D, 17-70mm at 70mm, 1/4000sec at f/4, ISO 200

Ailsa says: ‘I’m a sucker for intimate landscapes, and this one has everything I look for in such an image. At first glance, it’s almost as if you’re looking at an aerial shot of some vast expanse of land in a far-off country. But quickly you realise it’s a close-up that picks out a section of a rock formation (in this case, Hele Bay Beach in north Devon). Marriam clearly spent some time on her composition to ensure she would achieve exactly the effect she was after. The triangles that are created on the left and right sides at the bottom of the frame are an effective compositional device that helps direct our attention towards the line of warmer-coloured, slightly jagged rocks that move gently from left to right. Having the lighter rocks at the top and the darker ones at the bottom also helps to keep things balanced. A very pleasing shot of which she should be proud.’

Hollie Latham Hucker, technique editor, chooses Cypress Trees in Fall by Gary Hunter, California Canon EOS R5, 100-500mm at 159mm, 1/200sec at f/11, ISO 2000
