Go nuts for squirrels

There are two types of squirrel in the UK, the native red squirrel and the North American interloper, the grey squirrel. The grey is bigger and carries a disease that it is immune to but which is fatal to red squirrels, leading to the bushy-tailed rodent being labelled as vermin. Squirrels don't actually hibernate so you can see them all year round, but they do forage for nuts, seeds, acorns, pine cones, buds and even bird eggs in the warmer months and store them for the winter when there is less food about. You can find grey squirrels in most parks, woodlands and gardens but to see red ones head for Scotland, the Lake District and Anglesey.
