Bold autumnal colours lend themselves to bold editing techniques, says James Abbott

Spice up autumn

I don't know about you, but I often have to sit on my autumnal images for a few days or even a week so I have the critical distance I need to look at them objectively. This can often mean that I don't post images online in season, but that in itself should never be the goal of photography - it's much more personal than that. This critical distance allows you to not only select the best images you've taken but to also consider the right approach to editing them.

To give you a head start this year and, indeed, to help give last year's captures a well-deserved creative edit, here are four techniques that are designed to work specifically with autumnal landscapes and woodland shots. They're all as bold individually as the colours we enjoy in the landscape, so all you have to do is work out which of your shots they're most suitable for. You can even apply the effects together in any combination.
