When it comes to diverse landscapes, it's hard to beat Bali, an Indonesian island where you'll find everything from forested valleys and verdant paddy fields to wave-washed beaches and tropical lagoons. What's more, its hotels and resorts are just as diverse. But which one is right for you? Below are listed the properties best suited to your holiday plans.

Best for zen-seekers: Hoshinoya Bali

There are 30 thatched villas at this beautiful riverside resort in Ubud, which has always been a magnet for those seeking some time out. Traditional Balinese massage is the speciality at the gorgeous spa, although other treatments on offer include boreh (herbal body wraps) and Royal Lulur massages, once used as a prewedding treatment by members of the royal family. If you can prise yourself off the massage table, other activities available include morning yoga sessions, melukat (cleansing of the soul and mind using sacred spring water) and guided strolls through the local rice paddies.

Best for nightlife:

Hard Rock Hotel Bali

Located in Kuta, this lively 418-room hotel is a magnet for rock 'n' rollers, who can order a Fender guitar from room service and record their very own masterpiece in the hotel's music studio. One of the property's most popular spots is Centrestage, a bar, rock museum and live music venue, and some of Kuta's best bars and clubs are just a short walk from the hotel. Favourite spots include the beachfront Envy Bali Bar (don't miss the daily happy hours, which take place from 5pm-6pm), the three-storey Engine Room nightclub (the frozen cocktails are recommended) and Espresso Bar for live music and cheap drinks.
