HIMALAYAN BOOKSTORES: A SPECIAL BOND
Travellers' World
|April - May 2023
Bookstores on the one hand and travel B destinations in the Indian Himalayas born out of the same womb. Both give an infinite amount of comfort and pleasure, as well as an urge to know the unknown
A bookstore, any bookstore, offers an unlimited opportunity to explore not only the workings of this universe but also helps in knowing oneself. It is mostly through books that we travel into the wisdom of generations bestowed on us by the sages and seers of the human race. In the same way, the Indian Himalayan vistas also teach us emotions and feelings hitherto unknown whenever we visit their domains.. It might sound cliche if we call them the quintessential eternal hermits, always sitting with their poignant souls and indefinable understandings, straight as a ramrod and quiet like themselves.
But what happens if you find them together? If you find a nice bookstore in one of the hill stations that you have visited, won't your spirit leap up with joy and feel the bliss of a real discovery? Thankfully, most of the hill stations in India that are situated amidst the Himalayas have some of the finest bookstores in the country. If you ask me personally, the presence of a bookstore in a small Himalayan hamlet or town makes it more alluring to an intrepid traveller.

A GREEN WARRIOR in the heart of the Thar
I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Jitendra Solanki during a training programme on ecotourism organised by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and was instantly taken in by his deep love for the desert landscape. His knowledge of Rajasthan's wildlife, its resilient people, and the delicate balance that defines this unique ecosystem was truly inspiring. What stood out most was his passion for showcasing a different, more responsible side of Rajasthan, one that celebrates its natural heritage and communities with equal respect and sensitivity. It is for this; we celebrate him today as a Green Warrior.
