Heal your gut! FAT FALLS OFF

When it comes to weight loss, lately it seems like all we hear about is how healing the gut helps. But many of us battle extra pounds even though we don’t have gut issues to fix…or so we think. What gives?

“Roughly 80% of women over 50 have leaky gut syndrome to some extent,” says gut-health expert Vincent Pedre, M.D. The shocking part: “At least 25% of them don’t have any GI-related symptoms.” Instead of diarrhea or constipation, gut damage shows up in sneaky ways, causing symptoms like migraines, fatigue, allergies, rashes, mental fog or achy joints. Dr. Pedre says, “All these symptoms scream ‘gut issues.’”

In women with leaky gut, toxins and bad bugs literally leak into the bloodstream through the damaged gut lining. Once in the bloodstream, they trigger system-wide inflammation. In this way, a damaged gut “can affect your whole body, much like a faulty thyroid, making you feel tired, achy and depressed,” explains Dr. Pedre.

“Gut health is often the missing link for women who keep trying to lose weight and can’t,” says Dr. Pedre. A weakened gut exposes the brain to a highly inflammatory molecule called lipopolysaccharide, otherwise known as endotoxin. The “food coma” people joke about after meals is endotoxin escaping the confines of the gut and reaching the brain. And research shows that having high levels of endotoxin is a precursor to obesity and metabolic syndrome.
