A recent report found that UK food prices have risen, on average, around 6% in the past year, with some staples, such as margarine and vegetable fats, rocketing by 35%*.

However, while superfoods and healthy alternatives are sometimes the more expensive choice, if you know how, budgeting can be health-boosting too. Whether it’s stocking up on dried beans or overlooking marketing lingo, here’s how to find the real deals – those that are kind to both your waistline and wallet. 

Think ahead

Plan out all your meals – including snacks – for the week ahead. One study revealed that individuals planning their meals were found to have a healthier, more varied diet and lower levels of obesity**. Then, organise your list in categories according to the layout of your local supermarket. This will reduce the time you spend lost and inadvertently browsing – and sometimes buying – things you don’t need.
